Aging with Grace: The Difference Between Skilled Nursing vs. Memory Care

When exploring the right care for your aging loved one, it’s important to select a facility that understands the difference between skilled nursing vs. memory care. In this article, we’ll explain each type of care so you can make informed healthcare decisions for your loved one.

In short: Skilled nursing is tailored to the physical needs of the patient, while memory care is specific to the cognitive needs of the resident.

Since each care type fulfills a different need, it’s important to choose a facility that provides both. This helps you to proactively position your loved one in a single community so that, while their needs change, they can receive consistent, personalized care and avoid the stress of unnecessary change.

At Brentwood Health Care Center, we believe that everyone deserves to age with dignity and respect. We’re proud to offer both assisted living for more independent residents, as well as skilled nursing for those with additional medical needs, as well as memory care.

Now let’s take a closer look at assisted living vs. skilled nursing vs. memory care.

What is Assisted Living?

The assisted living community at Brentwood offers a variety of social opportunities for your loved one, as well as the therapy or medical assistance they need.

At Brentwood, we believe in the power of community. We help residents create strong social bonds through the following activities, which are offered to our residents in assisted living, skilled nursing and memory care communities.

Some of the activities include:

  • Classes on history, travel, spirituality, sports, TV, film, games, crafts and more
  • On-site salon
  • Bird sanctuary
  • Vegetable garden
  • Pastoral garden

What is Skilled Nursing?

At Brentwood, our skilled nursing community offers personalized, around-the-clock care, in a comfortable setting. Our trained staff are available to assist with the activities of daily life and do so with dignity and compassion.

We understand that aging often comes with physical instability. We keep your loved one safe with the Foresite Fall Detection system, located in both of our assisted living and memory care rooms. What is Memory Care?

Memory care is often additional care that is specific to the needs of residents who have Alzheimer’s or dementia. At Brentwood, we’re proud to offer our memory care community amenities like the Snoezelen therapy room, which have been recognized internationally.

The Snoezelen therapy room is uniquely designed to provide a multi-sensory environment, helping to stimulate the brain and reduce anxiety.

We also offer the following amenities, specific to the needs of our residents with dementia:

  • Activity stations and lounge
  • Centrally located nurses’ station
  • Snoezelen therapy room
  • Spa room
